National Green Tribunal Case for Elephant Protection

A legal intervention seeking stronger protection for elephants, their habitats, corridors and long-term conservation across North East India.

Case before the Hon’ble NGT

Filed in New Delhi on 26 April 2018

A case has been filed in the Hon’ble National Green Tribunal on 26/04/2018 at New Delhi by:

The Petitioners

Shri Pradip Kumar Bhuyan
IITAN and Senior Citizen
Dr. Kashmira Kakati
Wildlife Biologist and environmental activist

They have raised significant and grave issues regarding the safety of elephants, their habitats and issues related to man-elephant conflicts. Elephants are being killed on railway tracks, through electrocution from sagging electrical lines and due to man-elephant conflicts.

The case also concerns the loss and fragmentation of elephant and wildlife habitats and the lack of notification of Elephant Reserves and Elephant Corridors as Eco-Sensitive Zones.

Reliefs sought before the Hon’ble NGT

  • Remedies against the grave threats faced by elephants and their habitats.
  • Rejuvenation of Wildlife Sanctuaries, Reserve Forests, Protected Areas and other habitats as a permanent and long-term solution.
  • Notification and protection of Elephant Reserves and Elephant Corridors as Eco-Sensitive Zones.
  • Adequate compensation of ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore for the death of any elephant caused by the negligence of railway authorities or power companies.
  • The compensation should be deposited in a special account dedicated to elephant conservation.
